What Is Oil Cleansing And How Do You Do It?
Oil cleansing is a simple way of removing make up, sunscreen and the day's build up from your skin without leaving it feeling stripped or tight.
Instead of relying on a foaming cleanser, the method uses oil to loosen oil soluble substances on the skin, which are then removed with a warm, damp cloth.
Why Cleanse With Oil?
Our skin naturally produces oils, while many of the products we apply, including make up and sunscreen, also contain oil soluble ingredients.
Cleansing with oil helps to loosen these from the surface of the skin so they can be gently wiped away.
Unlike some stronger cleansers, a well suited cleansing oil shouldn't leave your skin with that very tight, squeaky clean feeling.
Start with dry hands and a dry face.
Massage a small amount of cleansing oil gently over your face for around 30 seconds, paying particular attention to areas where you are wearing make up or sunscreen.
Wet a soft face cloth with comfortably warm water, wring it out and hold it against your face briefly before gently wiping away the oil. Rinse the cloth and repeat if necessary.
Avoid very hot water and vigorous rubbing, neither is needed to get your skin clean.
Do You Need To Double Cleanse?
Not necessarily.
If your skin feels clean and comfortable after oil cleansing, there is no need to cleanse it again simply because double cleansing has become a popular skincare routine.
If you are wearing particularly heavy make up or water resistant sunscreen, you may prefer a second gentle cleanse.
Is Oil Cleansing Suitable For Everyone?
Many skin types can enjoy oil cleansing, particularly skin that tends to feel dry or tight after conventional cleansing.
However, everyone's skin is different. If you are prone to acne, sensitivity or irritation, introduce any new product gradually and pay attention to how your skin responds.
The oil itself matters too. A cleansing product should be formulated with oils appropriate for use on the face rather than simply using any oil you happen to have at home.
What Should You Do Afterwards?
Once your skin is clean, it is a good time to apply the rest of your skincare.
If you're using an oil or balm, you don't need to dry your face completely. Leaving the skin slightly damp before applying your skincare can help you make the most of waterless skincare products by helping to seal in some of that moisture.
A simple routine doesn't need many stages. Cleanse gently, moisturise according to what your skin needs, and protect it from the sun during the day.
